Coronavirus Information

A message from Mayor Hammond - March 29, 2020 - A note to Flat Rock:
I want to thank you for all you are doing to slow the spread of the Covid virus. I know that this disruption to our everyday lives is not easy. However, the sacrifices you are making, are making a difference.I want to assure you that your city leaders are doing everything in their power to keep you safe. Everyone from our council members, Department heads, and city employees are utilizing every resource we have to fight this virus. Most employees have been laid off or are working reduced hours. Our police and fire departments are working at capacity and every effort is being made to obtain the protective equipment they need. The DPS will continue all essential services such as water and sanitation.

Unfortunately, we must continue our sacrifices. This is a fast-moving virus and has the ability to attack any Flat Rock resident regardless of age or health. We at the city have taken unprecedented steps to protect the public. Places like the library, recreation center and historical campus will remain closed. And even though our parks remain open, we have closed the playgrounds as there is no way of decontaminating the equipment.
Please remember, continuing to stay at the home will slow the spread of the virus and reduce the overwhelming demands on our hospitals and medical staff. Again, I want to thank you, the citizens of Flat Rock, for all you are doing to keep your families, friend, and neighbors safe. Together, we will come through this stronger than ever.

Mayor Mark A Hammond

The City of Flat Rock's priority is always the health, safety, and welfare of residents, businesses, visitors and its staff. Flat Rock has proactively taken steps to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout the city, including the closure of City buildings to the public and the hosting of virtual meetings. All City Council, Commission and Board meetings will be conducted as virtual meetings.

Please visit our Coronavirus COVID-19 resource page for helpful information. As always, please contact us by phone at 734-782-2455 or by email clerk@flatrockmi.org with any questions.

Our Solid Waste and Recycling Process has changed

The City of Flat Rock prides itself on the services they provide for their citizens. The City is unique to its surrounding communities with the extra amenities that we continue to provide to the citizens as part of our normal routine. With that being said, we are going to make a few minor changes to the way we do things to make us more efficient in our daily and weekly processes both within our department and with our solid waste contractor, Green For Life. The services we provide are not changing but the way we are going about it will be a bit different.

- Special Pick Up
This process will not change, but this is just a reminder that if you have an item that needs a special pickup you will have to contact the Department of Public Services no later than 4 p.m. on Friday before you wish your item to be picked up. Barring an emergency or a larger than anticipated pick up list your special pickup will be picked up on the Monday following the week you called.

- Chipper
The Department of Public Services provides residents the option to have larger branches and brush chipped at no charge to the resident. This service will now be done in the same manner as the special pickup process shown above. The resident will have to call by 4 p.m. on the Friday before the anticipated branch/brush for chipping on the following Monday. Branches must be cut no larger than 4' lengths and have the roots cut off so that no dirt remains.

- Solid Waste Pick-up
Due to the rising cost of recycling the City had a very tough decision to make regarding the future of recycling within the community. To maintain the service that we currently enjoy would have cost the city approximately 30% more than the previous contract. In an attempt to maintain recycling and keep the cost reasonable the city elected to change to a Friday only collection schedule. Starting February 1, 2020, every single Flat Rock household whose solid waste/recycling is serviced by GFL will have a Friday collection day for garbage and recycling. No other part of your garbage service will change. Trash must be placed on your curbside no later than 7 a.m. on Friday.
If your house is missed, you must call GFL at: 586-772-8900 or go to https://gflusa.com/residential/customer-service-request/

If you have any questions or concerns related to these changes please contact us at (734) 782-2470 or via email at secdps@flatrockmi.org. Thank you for your understanding.
