Adopt-A-Sign Program

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?
The Adopt-A-Sign Program is a program created by the Flat Rock Beautification Committee to give the community an opportunity to participate in the care and upkeep of the City's Welcome to Flat Rock signs.
Through an agreement with the city, an individual, community, or group assumes responsibility for purchasing, planting, watering and maintaining the garden around the City signs which are located on public property.

WHY WAS THE PROGRAM CREATED?
Adopt-A-Sign Program was created to make it clear to visitors and residents that the city takes pride in the way it looks. Without you this would not be possible!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
In this program, volunteers select a sign to plant a garden near and to maintain the area for one year. The group itself, with the approval of the Flat Rock Beautification Committee, will select and provide suitable planting materials. The individual, community, or group assumes responsibility for purchasing, planting, watering and maintaining the garden around the city sign. We request a minimum maintenance of four times a year with a major clean up in the fall.

A designated Sign Leader will be required for each organization to serve as the liaison with the City of Flat Rock AdoptĀ A-Sign Coordinator. The sign leader will be responsible for signing the Adopt-A-Sign agreement, scheduling planting and clean up dates and ensuring compliance with these guidelines.

WHO CAN ADOPT?
Anyone! Local community organizations and clubs, religious organizations, businesses, families and even individuals (18 or older).

WHY ADOPT?
The program gives you a way to show pride in your community. Maintaining a garden is an easy, team-building project that takes little financial commitment and only requires a small amount of time to plant, weed, water and maintain, depending on the plant choices.

WHICH SIGNS CAN BE ADOPTED?
The signs are the "Welcome to Flat Rock" signs located on Will Carleton, Community Park, Huron River Dr, Vreeland, Gibraltar, Arsenal, S. Telegraph, Inkster and E. Huron River Dr. You may request a specific sign on the application.

WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES FOR PLANTING?

  • Consider the local amount of sunlight available at each site - consider shade tolerant species, as required
  • Consider the mature height of plants - so that the sign is always visible
  • Avoid invasive plant species
  • Consider plants that are drought-tolerant so frequent watering is not necessary
  • Consider plants that are deer resistant
